Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them, causing pain, discomfort, or even panic. While it’s always best to seek professional help as soon as possible, knowing how to manage the situation at home can make a big difference. Here’s a guide to handling common dental emergencies until you can see your dentist.
A toothache can be caused by cavities, infections, or gum issues. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to reduce inflammation and dislodge any trapped debris. Over-the-counter pain relievers, like ibuprofen, can help manage discomfort. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums, as it can cause burns.
If a tooth gets knocked out, handle it carefully by the crown (the top part), avoiding the root. Rinse it gently with water if dirty, but don’t scrub. Try to reinsert the tooth into its socket if possible, and bite down gently on gauze to keep it in place. If reinsertion isn’t possible, store the tooth in milk or a tooth preservation kit and seek immediate dental care.
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area, and save any broken pieces if possible. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to minimize swelling and reduce pain. Avoid biting down on hard foods and protect the damaged tooth until your dentist can assess it.
If a filling or crown falls out, try to save it and bring it to your dental appointment. In the meantime, cover the exposed tooth with dental cement, which can be found at most pharmacies, to protect it from further damage. Avoid eating on that side of your mouth.
Cuts or injuries to your tongue, cheeks, or gums can bleed heavily. Rinse your mouth with saltwater to clean the wound and apply gentle pressure with gauze or a clean cloth to stop the bleeding. Seek medical attention if bleeding doesn’t stop after 10-15 minutes.
